Your PCS Spark comes with a set of ready-to-use bundled patient scenarios that are created and maintained by the PCS Team. These virtual patients come with their own personalities and are trained to be able to respond accurately to virtually any questions your students might think of. Bundled patients also come with different resource sets that include discipline-specific assessments, labs, imaging, end-of-simulation quizes and more. The EZ Mode offers a simple way to review the patient scenarios you have access to.

Any given PCS patient scenario is made up of several building blocks:

  • The conversation

  • The Assessment/Objectives

  • Vitals and Physical Exam

  • Resouces & Supporting materials such as patient files, labs, orders and treatments, debrief content, etc.

These building blocks are available to you right from the start in the form of bundled patients. Before you start creating your own patient scenarios, review the patients that you already have access to to learn more about them. You can review your bundled patients on the Patients tab on your app.PCS.ai Account:

Click on the Open button next to any of the patients to see their info card in the EZ Mode. EZ Mode refers to how the info card is categorized into the most frequently needed tabs:

The info card shows you the patient's name and the avatar that will appear in virtual simulations. You will also find addional basic information and a short description of the patient here.

The dropdown in the top right lists all the resource sets. the patient is available with.

What are resource sets?

Resource sets are discipline-specific resources for a given patient. Resource sets do not alter the conversation capabilities of a patient, but they affect what resources are available during simulation.

These resources in the EZ Mode include the following:

  • Objectives

  • Hints and Tips

  • Patient File

  • Diagnose and Treat (including the physical exam findings)

  • Debrief Content

Most patient scenarios are usually available with three resource sets: Medicine, Nursing and Paramadicine. In short, this means that you can have multiple versions of the automated assessment, patient file, diagnostic options, etc. for a single patient scenario. For example, students running Alex Adams with the Medicine resource set will be scored on different objectives compared to students running Alex Adams with the Nursing resource sets.

More details on the patient's conversation, automated assessment objectives, starting vitals signs and supporting materials are available on their respective tabs:

Patient Concept

The Patient Concept is essentially what defines the patients responses and conversational capabilities:

Think of the Patient Concept as a case summary containing all information that a standardized patient would need in order to take on the role of a patient. The PCS patient will accurately adhere to anything that is covered in the Patient Concept. If the patient is asked about anything that is not covered in the Patient Concept, it will come up with believeable responses.

The Patient Concept is broken up and categorized into 14 sections for a more convenient viewing experience. Hover over the icons for further details on what the specific sections entail.

Objectives

The Objectives tab is where you can find the automated assessment that is set up for each patient scenario:

The credits (Greeting, Introduction, Medication Use, etc.) are grouped into sections (Greeting & Introduction, Reason for Visit, Past & Current Medication Usage, etc.).

Each credit is set up with criteria that students need to pass during a simulation to get a certain amount of points, whereas failing the criteria may result in deductions. Scroll down on the Objectives tab to view all assessment objectives and credits.

One patient scenario can have multiple Objectives. Switch between them using the dropdown in the top right.

Vital Signs

You can find the starting vitals of the patient here.

These vitals and waveforms will often be available during simulation. In some environment such as the Home or Clinic, students will be able to check the vitals without interacting with the patients. The Hospital environment requires students to equip sensors for the vitals to appear.

Support Materials

Supporting materials provide additional information to faculty and students, both outside and during simulations:

  • Hints and Tips: General simulation and HPI hints that students can access during simulations

  • Patient File: A door note or instructions for students during simulations

  • Background Info: A detailed case summary that you can read to learn more about the patient encounter

  • Diagnose and Treat: A collection of labs, imaging, treatments, consultations, followups, referrals, etc.

  • Debrief Content: Post simulation debriefing that appears for students once they conclude their simulations

Once you familiarize yourself with the EZ View, you can also use the Advanced Mode to access a wider range of options when reviewing your patients.
