ALEX on the Pro Service level also includes Virtual Mode. ALEX’s Virtual Simulator Mode allows you and your students to run simulations even when the physical manikin is not powered on or connected.

This feature provides a flexible, browser-based simulation experience, enabling independent learning and distance training.

When you have Virtual Mode, your ALEX will have a START button even if it is turned off, meaning you can begin a virtual session at any time. Each ALEX unit supports one simulation at a time, whether on the manikin or in-browser.

To start a session, simply choose a patient scenario from the available list while ALEX is turned off.

During a virtual simulation, you and your students can interact with a 3D avatar instead of the physical manikin. Features include:

  • Clinical Interview: Ask verbal questions when ALEX is in listening mode.

  • Physical Exam: Hover over the patient’s body to see available exams. Click to place the appropriate instrument and conduct the exam.

  • Pulse & Auscultation: Hear heart, lung, and bowel sounds based on the patient’s condition.

  • Debriefing & Self-Assessment: Review simulation logs after each session, including self-assessment reports if scoring criteria were set.

Setting Up Virtual Mode for Independent Learning

You can also allow your students to run virtual simulations on their own computers, one at a time!

To enable Virtual Mode for learners:

  • Test & Assign the patient scenario in Simulator Settings (cogwheel icon).

  • Share the Access link (found on the Sharing tab of the Simulator Settings) with your students.

  • Schedule sessions to ensure students take turns when ALEX is available. Only one simulation can be running at a time, but there is no limit to how many students can run virtual simulations!

You can learn the ins and outs of the Virtual Mode here.

That wraps up our feature spotlight series! We hope these articles have helped you discover (or rediscover) all that ALEX has to offer. Whether you are just getting started or have been using ALEX for years, our goal is to make your training experience smoother, smarter, and more impactful.
