In this feature series, we’re showcasing key capabilities of ALEX/AXEL. This article focuses on: AI conversation, Push-to-Talk (VoIP), and Text-to-Speech (TTS)—giving you full control over patient communication.

AI-Driven Conversations*

ALEX listens and responds in real-time, allowing for natural patient interviews with AI-powered speech recognition. To enable:

  • Power on ALEX and start a simulation.

  • Press ALEX’s shoulder until you hear a beep—this signals the AI is listening.

  • Start asking questions, just like with a real patient.

*Only available on ALEX

Want to take control of the conversation? We got you covered!

Push-to-Talk (VoIP): Be the voice of ALEX/AXEL

With VoIP, you can speak through ALEX/AXEL using your own voice.

  • Ensure your browser allows microphone access when prompted.

  • Press and hold the Push-to-Talk button (turns blue).

  • When you see “Talk Now”, speak into your headset or microphone.

  • Release the button when done—your voice plays through ALEX/AXEL.

Text-to-Speech: Make ALEX Say Anything

Prefer to type what ALEX/AXEL says? With Text-to-Speech, any text you enter, your manikin will vocalize.

  • In a running session, enter text into the Text-to-Speech field (under Sounds).

  • Press Enter—ALEX will immediately say the text.

These features let your students engage with ALEX/AXEL in the way that best fits their training.
