Over the next several articles, we’ll be highlighting key features of your ALEX/AXEL to help you get the most out of your simulator—whether you are a beginner or a seasoned user. Each article will focus on a specific tool or function designed to enhance your simulation experience.

First up: the SmartScope!

Your SmartScope is an essential tool for realistic auscultations and blood pressure measurement using Korotkoff sounds with ALEX/AXEL.

  • Your SmartScope automatically connects to ALEX/AXEL via Bluetooth.

  • Just turn on your manikin, then power up the SmartScope by pressing the blue button on its side—or simply place it on the manikin’s chest to activate.

  • When the LED turns green, you’re ready to listen.

  • Your SmartScope will automatically turn off after five minutes of inactivity to preserve battery life, which lasts up to 5 hours per charge. Recharge easily with a micro USB cable.

Realistic Sounds, Real Learning

ALEX/AXEL has built-in location-sensing tags that guide you to the right auscultation points.

Pro-tips

  • When placed correctly, your SmartScope will deliver the realistic heart, lung, or bowel sounds selected in the session control.

  • Every auscultation event is logged with a timestamp, helping track training progress.

  • The intensity changes naturally depending on positioning—for example, Aortic Stenosis will be strongest at the Aortic point and fade realistically at other locations.
