Every course and cohort is different. Some students may be just beginning to learn how to use tools like a stethoscope or blood pressure cuff, while others may already be proficient and need to focus on higher-order clinical skills.

With customization, you can:

  • Require the use of tools to reveal results

  • Allow results to appear instantly without tool interaction

  • Hide or remove specific exam items to focus the learning experience

  • Match the difficulty level to the case or scenario

How It Works

During a simulation, students typically access physical exam results through the PX Inspections tab. From there, they can view results like:

  • Auscultation

  • Blood pressure

  • Pulses

  • Eye exams

  • And more

By default, these results are available immediately with a click. But you can customize which items show up, what results they display, and whether tool use is required.

Editing a Custom Patient

1. Navigate to PatientsMy Patients.

2. Open the patient you want to edit.

3. Go to the Support Materials tab and click on the Physical Exam button.

4. Here, you’ll see a list of all available exam items in your scenario.

The available items are in the left column. Click on any specific item to edit the description on the right. You can include text, images and embedded videos.

Certain exams (such as auscultations, eye exams, palpations, etc.) are also available during the simulation by using the tools on the tool tray.

By default, students can get the results from a blood pressure measurement by using the tools or clicking the relevant item from the PX Inspections list.

If the aim of the scenario is to teach students the correct use of tools, you can hide the items from the Inspections list. This ensures students only get examination results once they have used the relevant tool.

To hide an item, select it and click on the Hide from PX Inspection List.

For items that do not have an associated tool in the simulation, you can simply delete them to remove them from the list.

You can also disable the Physical Exam entirely if it is not required for the scenario.

To do that:

1. Navigate to the Support Materials tab in the patient editor, then click on the Available Tools button.

2. Uncheck the Physical Exam in the list.

What About Bundled Patients?

Bundled patients and their default resource sets can’t be edited directly. However, you can still customize their physical exams by creating a custom resource set.

Creating a Custom Resource Set in a Bundled Patient

1. Navigate to the Patients tab, then click on the Bundled Patients tab.

2. Open the Bundled patient in which you want to create custom resource set.

3. Click on the Advanced Mode button.

4. Navigate to the Resources tab.

This is where you can find all supporting materials that come with the bundled patient scenario, including available diagnostics, checklists and Physical Exam items.

The /default resource sets/ are not editable in a Bundled Patient, but you can use them as template to create custom resource sets that you can customize.

5. Open the dropdown to select a resource set, then hit Copy.

6. Rename the resource set according to your needs, then hit OK.

You now have a custom resource set that you can edit in the Bundled Patient. The resource set dropdown will be available anytime you open this patient, and you can proceed with customizing the Physical Exam.

Tips
